Since 46 percent of teenagers reported this year that they have used drugs, it is a challenge today to raise healthy, drug free children. The availability of drugs coupled with the peer pressure teenagers face would lead one to think drug use, or at least drug experimentation, is inevitable, but it is not. Drug use is not a normal part of adolescence and abstinence is feasible if you start talking with your children about the repercussions of drug use at an early age.
Drug Free America Foundation developed their Family Guide section to be used as an effective tool to encourage parents to reinforce positive, no-use messages and establish fun, healthy alternatives to drugs. A recent study by CASA Columbia has found that teens from families that rarely eat dinner together were 72 percent likelier than the average teen to use illegal drugs, cigarettes and alcohol, while those from families that almost always eat dinner together were 31 percent less likely than the average teen to engage in these activities. Family togetherness is the number one preventive to drug use.
Drug Free America Foundation would like to invite parents and other concerned adults to participate in a family dinner every Thursday night. It's easy! We'll provide the recipe and you provide the family.

Super Duper Easy Ice Cream in a Bag |
|
Ingredients
2 cups Heavy Whipping Cream 2 cups Half-and-Half Cream 1/2 cup White Sugar 2 tsp Vanilla Extract 1 bag crushed ice 4 cups coarse salt
Each ice cream maker will need the following:
2 pint size resealable plastic freezer bags 1 gallon-size resealable plastic freezer bag Thick gloves or towel to protect hands/fingers
Directions
In a pitcher or large measuring cup, stir together the whipping cream, half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla extract until sugar has dissolved.
Pour about 1/2 cup of mixture into a pint-size plastic bag and seal carefully, squeezing out extra air. Place each sealed bag into a second pint-size bag, again squeezing out extra air. Seal carefully.
Fill each gallon-size plastic bag about halfway with ice and add 1/2 cup coarse salt. Place one sealed small bag into the large bag, squeeze out most of the air and seal the large bag.
Now for the fun part! You can customize your ice cream by adding fruits, nuts, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, Oreo cookies, or small candies.
Wear your thick gloves, or wrap the bag in a thick towel to protect your hands against the extreme cold. Shake and massage the bag for about 5 minutes or until the mixture thickens into ice cream. Add more salt and ice to the otuer bag if the ice cream hasn't formed after 10 minutes of continuous motion.
Remove the outer pint-size bag before you open the inner bag so you don't get the any of the salty ice on your ice cream. Enjoy! |
