Advocacy

At Drug Free America Foundation (DFAF), advocacy is at the heart of everything we do. We champion policies and initiatives that protect public health and safety, reduce drug demand, and support communities in building drug-free environments. Through research-driven campaigns, legislative efforts, and community-based programs, we work to ensure that both national and international policies are rooted in evidence-based strategies that prioritize prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Our Focus Areas

  • Recovery & Stigma Reduction: Making recovery more visible and challenging stigma is an essential component of our advocacy efforts. We celebrate recovery stories and work to remove the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help and finding long-term support within their communities. DFAF is proud to champion the Inclusive Recovery Cities model in the US and around the globe.
  • Curbing the Opioid Epidemic: The opioid epidemic continues to devastate individuals, families, and communities across the globe. DFAF is actively engaged in advocating for comprehensive policies that address the root causes of opioid misuse while expanding access to life-saving interventions. Our approach includes promoting evidence-based prevention strategies and improving access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT). We also work to ensure that prescribers and healthcare providers are equipped with the necessary tools to prevent opioid overprescription and monitor patient safety.
  • Alternatives to Incarceration: We advocate for alternatives to incarceration that offer individuals struggling with substance use disorder the support they need to recover and reintegrate into society. By promoting evidence-based diversion programs, treatment courts, and community-based interventions, we work to reduce recidivism and foster healthier outcomes for individuals and communities. Our goal is to create pathways to recovery and prevent the lifelong consequences of incarceration for non-violent drug offenses.
  • Marijuana Education & Prevention: Through initiatives like the “Don’t Let Florida Go to Pot” campaign, we are committed to educating the public on the harms of marijuana and the dangers associated with legalization. We advocate for sensible policies that protect youth, families, and communities from the negative impacts of marijuana use and commercialization.
  • Drug-Free Workplaces: We provide training and resources to help businesses create and maintain drug-free workplaces. Our programs empower organizations to establish strong policies, conduct effective employee training, implement drug testing protocols, and offer support through employee assistance programs. As part of this, we advocate for recovery-ready and family-friendly workplace policies.
  • Youth Empowerment: DFAF plays an active role in fostering the leadership and engagement of young people in drug demand reduction. Through events like International Youth Day, we promote the role of youth in shaping a future where drug-free communities thrive.
  • International Collaboration: Our advocacy extends beyond borders. DFAF works with international organizations, civil society, and government agencies to promote sound drug policies in alignment with global frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are actively involved in collaborative efforts to address drug-related challenges on the world stage, such as the Comission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).
  • Gender Equity in Drug Policy: DFAF is committed to advancing gender equity in drug policy. We recognize that women and gender minorities often face unique challenges related to substance use and access to treatment. Our focus includes pushing for gender-sensitive prevention programs, expanding access to specialized treatment services for women, and promoting support for mothers and families affected by substance use. By working with policymakers, healthcare providers, and advocacy groups, we aim to create a more just and supportive system that recognizes and responds to the distinct experiences of women and gender minorities in the context of substance use and recovery.

Advocacy Days

Each year, DFAF hosts Advocacy Days at state capitols, where we bring together community members, prevention specialists, and advocates to engage directly with legislators. These events provide a platform to discuss critical drug policy issues, share personal stories, and advocate for evidence-based policies that protect public health and safety. Participants have the opportunity to meet with state lawmakers, participate in workshops, and learn how to effectively influence policy decisions. Advocacy Days empower individuals to raise their voices and play an active role in shaping the future of drug policy in their communities.

Florida’s next Prevention Advocacy Day will be held on January 22nd. In partnership with the Community Coalition Alliance (CCA), we are hosting a series of training sessions to help you prepare. These sessions will cover who you may meet, what to expect at the Capitol, and essential tips and tools for effective communication. Learn more here.
