The Colombo Plan has issued a global health alert to inform public safety and public health officials worldwide about the presence of injectable liquid fentanyl. Reports of diverted injectable fentanyl solutions from pharmaceutical sources have been reported in countries where illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF) has not yet emerged, including Nigeria, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Argentina, Brazil, and Costa Rica. Additionally, injectable fentanyl solutions are being diverted or stolen from healthcare facilities in Panama, the United States, and Europe.
This situation is extremely concerning as such diversion could introduce fentanyl into drug markets that are not accustomed to illicit opioid use or exacerbate current crises, such as in the U.S.
